A quiet beginning

A good morning prayer

Morning prayer does not need to win a race against your inbox. A few attentive minutes can help you enter the day on purpose.

At a glance

  • Start before checking notifications when you can.
  • Use one concrete point of gratitude.
  • Name the work and relationships ahead.
  • Carry one sentence of prayer into the day.

Short answer

Begin by noticing that you are awake. Thank God for one specific gift, name the day in front of you, ask for wisdom, and choose one person to carry in prayer. Keep the practice small enough to return to tomorrow.

A prayer for this morning

Good morning, God. Thank you for breath, light, and another day I did not create for myself. Help me receive it before I rush through it.

Give me wisdom for the decisions ahead and patience with the people I meet. Keep my work honest. Guard my attention from noise that does not deserve it.

Care for the people I love and the people I find difficult. Bring me back to you when I become hurried or sharp. Let me do the next good thing with a clear heart. Amen.

A five-minute morning rhythm

Sit somewhere you can stay for five minutes. Take one slow breath. Name one gift, one concern, one person, and one task. Read a short Psalm or a few lines from a Gospel.

End with a sentence you can remember, such as, "God, make me attentive and kind today." Put it on a note if that helps. The goal is a practice you can keep.

Pray over the actual calendar

Look at the meetings, errands, caregiving, travel, and rest on your schedule. Ask where you are likely to become anxious, impatient, or distracted.

Prayer can shape the way you enter a task. It can also reveal that the schedule is unreasonable. Canceling, delegating, or asking for help may be the wiser response.

Begin again on ordinary mornings

Some mornings are interrupted before they begin. Children wake early, pain returns, the alarm fails, or bad news arrives. A missed routine is not a failed relationship with God.

Use the minute you have. Pray while the kettle boils, on the train, or before opening the laptop. Tomorrow offers another beginning.

Questions for reflection

  1. 1What am I grateful to receive this morning?
  2. 2Where will I need patience today?
  3. 3Who can I carry in prayer?
  4. 4What one sentence do I want to remember?

Common questions

What is a simple good morning prayer?

Try: "God, thank you for this day. Give me wisdom, patience, and courage. Help me love the people in front of me and do my work honestly. Amen."

What Psalm is good for morning prayer?

Psalm 5, Psalm 90, and Psalm 143 each contain language suited to the beginning of a day.

How long should morning prayer be?

There is no required length. A repeatable five-minute practice can be more useful than a long routine you cannot sustain.

What if I forget to pray in the morning?

Pray when you remember. Christian prayer is not limited to a time slot, and you do not need to punish yourself for a missed routine.
